Walking Holiday to Langbathsee in Austria

The Rosenhof is located in Ebensee which is known as Traunsee’s hiking paradise with over 200km of hiking and walking trails, from paths at the top of mountain peaks with fabulous views to loop trails around beautiful lakes or quiet forest tracks. To give you an idea of the variety of walks in our area we have compiled the following itinerary that you could follow :-

Day 1: Take a leisurely walk along the river Traun to Ebensee to familiarise yourself with your surroundings.

Day 2: Today you can head up into the mountains. Take the cable car from Ebensee up to the stunning Feuerkogel plateau. Walk to the European Cross, which is made up of rocks from the European nations. The panoramic views from the plateau are spectacular with mountain peaks stretching as far as the eye can see and lakes dotted around below.

Day 3: Visit the beautiful lake of Langbathsee. The lake has a stunning mountain backdrop and is often used for TV adverts and films. In the summer months the waters are warm enough to tempt you in for a swim, so don’t forget your costume.

Walking to the stunning Langbathsee is well worth it!

Day 4: Follow the historic Soleweg river path to the lovely spa town of Bad Ischl. This was the former summer residence of the Austrian Royals. You can visit the summer palace, enjoy some shopping, indulge in fantastic cakes at Café Zauner or maybe just take it easy and spend a few hours in the relaxing therapeutic waters of the thermal baths.

Day 5: Start the day with a walk around lake Offensee before following the loggers path through the forest. You’ll be rewarded with peace and tranquility as you follow the river down to the Rindbach Waterfall.

Day 6:  Today you can let the train take the strain for the first few miles as you head to Hallstatt. The town of Hallstatt is a world heritage site set on the lake of Hallstättersee. Enjoy wandering through the old streets and take a tour through the salt mines.

Walking up the mountain lets you see more!

Day 7: Begin the day with a ferry ride to Gmunden on the northern shore of lake Traunsee. Explore the town and relax in one of the many cafes that sit along the lakefront before heading up the Grünberg mountain either by foot or cable car. Enjoy the mountain meadows and great views over lake Traunsee before dropping back down to the ferry to bring you back home.

Walking round Traunsee, there are lots of beautiful spots such as near Villa Toscana

The above itinerary is designed to give you a hint of what is available. There are, of course, many more routes and we are always happy to discuss other options with you and look through maps with you.

Summary

We visited Rosenhof for 5 nights in early May and, although a little limited without a car, we found the location very good with only a short walk to the train station and nearby restaurants. We were a bit unlucky with the weather which curtailed our hiking plans but we found plenty to do in surrounding towns and places of historical interest around Ebensee. This is a very central location for access to some spectacular mountain scenery and excellent walking opportunities (in finer weather with less high snow than in early May!) We would love to return and found Robert and Catherine to be extremely caring and knowledgeable hosts. Our room was spacious and very clean and comfortable. Strongly recommended. Ali P
